ADHD and Autism Referrals

Who this is for?

  • Adults and children registered with our practice seeking assessment for possible ADHD or autism via NHS-commissioned services, including the NHS Right to Choose option.
  • You do not need a GP appointment for us to process an administrative referral request as outlined below.

Your options:

  1. Local NHS service (adults)

For children please speak with your child’s school as they can do a Needs Led Assessment and refer without needing any GP input

Adults: we can refer you to the locally commissioned NHS adult ADHD or adult autism service. Waiting times and triage steps are set by the provider and are outside our control.  Please complete the online questionnaire below. We will confirm once your referral has been sent.

  1. NHS Right to Choose (RTC) (adults and children)

If you are an NHS patient in England, you may choose an alternative, clinically appropriate provider in England that holds an NHS contract for child or adult ADHD or autism assessment.

To use RTC, you must supply the provider’s full details so we can direct the referral appropriately. Providers and estimated waiting times for both ADHD and autism can be found at:

Right to Choose - ADHD UK - Your NHS options

Once you have chosen your RTC provider please follow their application process. Please also complete our Giffords online questionnaire below. We will confirm once your referral has been sent.

Please note we do not complete provider-specific online forms or carry out extra checks (such as blood tests, hearing/vision tests, or pre-referral examinations) unless they are clinically necessary for your routine GP care. Any assessments required for the Right to Choose pathway should be completed by the receiving service.

This approach helps us prioritise clinical care, reduce delays, and ensure safe transfer of care. If a provider asks for extra forms or tests, we will ask them to accept our clinical referral letter.

  1. Private Referral

Please choose your provider (www.adhduk.co.uk is a useful resource) and arrange an assessment directly with them. No GP referral is required.

Medication, shared care and ongoing management (ADHD)

  • If a specialist recommends medication, they are responsible for initiating treatment and supplying the initial prescription.
  • Shared-care prescribing in primary care is only considered where there is a formal NHS-commissioned shared care agreement with clear specialist support. Many NHS GP surgeries, including ours, may not enter shared care with private providers due to capacity constraints, safety considerations and limited access to specialist back-up. Where a safe shared-care framework is not in place, prescribing remains with the specialist.
  • If you pursue private assessment/medication initiation please be aware we may not be able to prescribe ADHD medication initiated privately.

Attention Deficit / Hyperactivity Disorder Self Referral for Assessment

We do not make recommendations about which provider is most suitable for you.

You are responsible for doing your own research and assuring yourself that a provider is able to meet your needs.

We do not complete provider-specific online forms or carry out extra checks (such as blood tests, hearing/vision tests, or pre-referral examinations) unless they are clinically necessary for your routine GP care. Any assessments required for their pathway should be completed by the receiving service.
