When We Are Closed
Giffords Surgery’s Out of Hours Service is provided by Wiltshire Medical Services which employ local doctors and other health professionals to run the service.
The Out of Hours Service (which runs when the surgery is closed) is contactable by telephoning 0300 111 5717. Alternatively, if you telephone the surgery on 01225 896630 you will hear the following message.
Thank you for calling Giffords Surgery. The surgery is closed, we re-open at 08.30am weekdays only. If you have a medical problem that is urgent and will not wait until the surgery re-opens, please telephone our Out of Hours Service on 0300 111 5717. I repeat for medical emergencies please contact 0300 111 5717. Alternatively, hold and you will be transferred to the Out of Hours Service
When you have been connected to the Out of Hours service you will be put through to trained staff who will decide on the appropriate action which may involve the patient attending an emergency clinic at the hospital, or in the case of severe illness, the doctor making a home visit or an ambulance being called.
The emergency clinic may be held in one of the Primary Care Trust’s minor injuries units. Patients with medical problems will only be seen in these units if they have gone through the telephone referral system.
Help and advice can also be provided by a pharmacist or NHS Direct on 0845 4647 which can be accessed 24 hours a day seven days a week. NHS Direct provides information on health conditions, self help and support organisations as well as local health services such as the out-of-hours pharmacy.
A well-stocked medicine cabinet will help treat many everyday illnesses. A small supply of painkillers and other remedies will help treat common ailments such as coughs, colds and sore throats.
NHS Direct
